Today is the anniversary of the birth of one of America's greatest writers. Famous for his life in fictional Yoknapatawpha County, he is the master of the descriptive, colorful writing style of the American south. He is also one of the most quotable writers- here are our Top 5 Faulkner-isms:

“The past is never dead. It's not even past.”

“Pouring out liquor is like burning books.”

“A writer needs three things, experience, observation, and imagination, any two of which, at times any one of which, can supply the lack of the others.”

“Don't bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.”

“Civilization begins with distillation”

Happy Birthday Mr Faulkner!
