Today, we introduce a new weekly feature at The Lodge- Whiskey Wednesday.
We don't want you to think we're a bunch of boozers over here, but we do appreciate the finer points of American Whiskey, especially Bourbon. So we thought we'd share with you our tastings.
First up this week is the Willett Pot Still Reserve.
Willett has roots dating back to the mid-1800s in Kentucky when John David Willett was the Master Distiller for Moore, Willett, and Frenke Distillery. The original Willett Distilling Company was established in 1935 and unfortunately ceased distilling in the late 70s, when they were acquired and renamed Kentucky Bourbon Distillers.
The Willett Pot Still brand was introduced only 5 years ago but uses a single barrel of Bourbon for each batch of bottling and is aged between 8 and 10 years. Our bottle is #112 out of a 284-bottle lot from Barrel #8622. It comes in a very cool bottle resembling a Pot Still. We're fans of 10 to 12 year aging as we find them very drinkable. We always do our tastings neat, so our comments will reflect that experience.
Upon Pouring, the scent of Willett is unmistakeably Bourbon with a sharp alcohol nose with sweetness and nuttiness. The color is a rich brown, clearer in the pour than the bottle. We like to look at Whiskey because it reminds us of restoring Vintage Cars, meaning you have no idea what you're getting into until you're neck deep. Same with Whiskey- every one is different and they may look tame, but….
The Taste- There are notes of honey, citrus, vanilla, some nuttines. There's definitely a sweetness at the finish. The flavor is softer on the front and stronger on the back.
The Finish- Is Medium strength with a little heat, but not too much. This one will definitely soften a bit with water, even with ice if you must.
We'd say compared to other Bourbons of a similar age, the Willett is smoother than say an Elijah Craig but has more fullness than Eagle Rare. We would recommend it and would drink it again (ok we did).
