Today, 50 years onwards from a life cut too short, we honor and remember one of our past Presidents, John F Kennedy. Nowadays, most Americans, this writer included, are too young to have ever known him, to have experienced his charisma and optimism, and to have basked in the positive spirit of the time. What lives on is the legacy of the man.
We admire Kennedy because he was a man, a real man. A symbol of life well-lived. The sailing, the drinking, the women, the sports, the cool clothes. All of it made Men want to be like him and women want to be with him. And he was President by 43! Of course, he had a head start, descending from a powerful, connected family. But he fought for our country, he had a clear idealistic vision of America as a great nation, and he had style. Preppy style. Loads of it. The slim ties, oxford shirts, loafers, shetland sweaters, and Ray-bans. The style endures with the man.
Of course we'll never know what JFK would have achieved after one-thousand days and it no longer matters. What's important is that we remember that there was a time when Americans believed that we could accomplish anything and be the best. Here at The Lodge, we believe that time still exists. There's no time like now.
"Once you say you're going to settle for second, that's what happens to you in your life"- JFK
